I couldn't just with one leg get him so asked my interpreter to help me drag him to the

side we were on.

He was a big guy too.

So we pull him over to my side and he's not breathing very very very low pulse.

He had got shot in the neck area and maybe like the side of a stomach.

So anyway I start trying to treat those wounds with gauze as best as I can.

There is more to being ready than preparation.

You can be prepared for the worst case scenario, have all the tools and training, but readiness

also includes the ability to bring some of that training to bear, to quiet the adrenaline

and anticipation that has built up in our minds and to keep them out of the way so we can

react.

This includes willingness in a way that preparedness doesn't have to.

To put it another way, we all know what we're prepared to do, but we don't know what we're

ready to do until it is time to act.

Yeah I didn't know I was sit until I tried to stand up after we had jumped to cover

and stuff.

We train with the first thing in any firefighter is get to cover and then return fire.

You know when I looked over and he had already had you know he was already swinging his

gun up and shooting.

Even then I didn't know I had been shot.

Jumping behind cover.
