of Modern Warfare at King's College London. His new book is The Eastern Front.

A History of the Great War in 1914 to 1918. This is part of Nick's trilogy.

To my knowledge, I've read and spoken with Nick about the Western Front, which was the extent of my knowledge of the first war

until Nick provided me the Eastern Front. We're now looking at what the high command in Germany

believed was secondary.

They poured their efforts and their soldiers and their thinking about winning into the

Western Front. The Eastern Front was always necessary to hold

on to, but not necessary to win.

So whenever the Auster, Hungarians got into trouble, we have a pattern of having either

asking for aid from Germany or Germany offered troops.

The Russians have overwhelming manpower, but they're led by, I don't

think I can call it superstition, that Tsar has an unusual power over the Army of Russia and he has a lot of generals

who are more worshipful than they are effective on the battlefield. The Germans that are into a contest with the Russians

along with the Austro-Hungarian Empire and from late 14 to the middle of 15, they're successful.
