McKenna received his masters in botany at the University of Hawaii in 1979, followed by his doctorate in the same field at the University of British Columbia in 1984. Dennis is the brother of Terrence McKenna, a cultural figure and proponent for the exploration of psychedelics. Together they co-authored The Invisible Landscape. Much later Dennis would write a memoir, Brotherhood of the Screaming Abyss, detailing he and his brothers exploits in the field. 0:19.2	today to have with me, Dr. Dennis McKenna. He's an American ethno-pharmacologist, lecturer
0:27.9	and author. He is a founding board member and director of ethno-pharmacology at Hefter
0:34.2	Research Institute, a non-profit organization dedicated to the use and exploration of psychedelic
0:41.3	medicines. Dr. McKenna received his PhD from the University of British Columbia and worked as a postdoc
0:49.5	at the National Institute of Mental Health and at Stanford. He is the brother of Terrence McKenna,
0:54.7	who believed that the human relationship with psychedelic plants played a major role in our
1:00.1	cognitive and social evolution, who is a very well-known figure to denizens of the modern
1:05.8	psychedelic movement. Dr. McKenna and I first met some years ago, 2016, in Toronto at a conference
1:13.3	hosted by mine-matters at the University of Toronto, where we shared our views on the significance,

1:38.1	eight years. So neither you nor I were famous at that time. Now you're quite famous, and I'm
1:47.6	a little more well-known. So time passes. Well, it's very good to see you. So tell me what you're
1:56.2	up to recently. As you said, we haven't spoken for a number of years. So what are you busy doing now?
2:03.0	Well, basically, so I immigrated to Canada in 2019, and I left academia. I left the University of
2:12.3	Minnesota, immigrated up here with my wife, and I started a nonprofit called the McKenna Academy
2:21.4	for Natural Philosophy. And originally, it was incorporated here in Canada, but then we
2:30.2	dissolved that and incorporated it in the states because it made more sense. And the McKenna
2:36.0	Academy for Natural Philosophy is basically devoted to education, as you can tell by the name
