Summary

Is it possible to take control of your career in a world of work that’s full of change? Helen and Sarah think it is IF you focus on the right things in the right way. So, instead of over planning our careers they talk about increasing your control by defining what you want and developing the skills and support you need. By increasing your clarity and focusing on the factors that are in your control, you can better adapt and take advantage of the squiggleness we experience at work. Hosted on Acast. Hi, I'm Sarah.

And I'm Helen.

And this is the Squiggly Careers podcast.

0:07.5

We're a weekly show to help you navigate the ups and downs of your squiggly career.

And we share lots of practical ideas for action and tools to try out that we hope leave you as well as us with a little bit more confidence, clarity and control. And control is the

0:23.1

topic of the day. Oh yeah, I hadn't made that connection until now, which is bad, isn't it?

0:27.7

That's why there's two of us to join the dots where someone doesn't. But I think we've talked

0:33.9

1:01.2

a distinction between being able to plan and predict and preempt everything so that isn't what

1:06.4

we're talking about because that is a false promise because we're all going to do jobs that don't

1:10.5

exist yet we're all going to need to develop skills that we're not sure what they are yet so

1:14.9

being able to plan predicting control for that kind of future just isn't possible but what we can do

1:20.8

is help you have a sense of control over your career where you at least feel prepared for the

1:25.9

changes that are going to come and you can be proactive about your development.

1:31.0

And this sort of ability to take control of the uncertainty is very much a skill that Sam

1:37.2

Conniff talked about and he talked about it on the podcast with us and through a lot of his

work on uncertainty experiments.
