Summary

Jen welcomes historian and author Heather Cox Richardson to explore the historical continuum of the Right’s war on freedom and equality from before the Civil War through the rise of MAGA. They discuss how the Southern oligarchy of the Bleeding Kansas era used race to push the average citizen to vote against their interests, and lay out  how that authoritarian legacy continues to drive limitations on voting rights, sustain racism and misogyny, and undergird our politics with violence.  Will we be able to overcome the forces still conspiring against our rights to continue perfecting our democracy?

Hello, this is Jennifer Rubin, and this is Jen Rubin's Green Room.

0:15.6

I hope you had a lovely Thanksgiving.

0:18.8

All the leftovers are gone, the guests are gone. You've taken that pretty,

0:24.4

pretty tablecloth to the cleaners. You've cleaned up the house and now it's quiet again.

0:30.1

Isn't that nice to have your house back to normal? Well, I really do hope it was a lovely holiday.

0:36.0

And now we plunge into the Christmas season.

0:38.7

Of course, the Christmas decorations were up, at least in our neighborhood,

0:42.1

even before the Thanksgiving Day festivities.

0:45.8

But that's the way of the world, isn't it?

0:48.1

Well, the news did not wait for the holidays, and we have a lot of it of late.

0:54.8

To begin with, we not only had a successful pause in the Gaza-Israeli war,

1:02.3

but we extended that pause, and that was due really to the solo work, the intervention,

1:10.5

the constant nudging and nudging of President Biden,

1:14.9

who is a roll-up-the-sleeves kind of diplomat, who knows all these people who pushed and pushed and pushed.

1:21.3

And as a result, as of Tuesday afternoon at least, some 69 hostages, mostly Israeli, but other nationalities as well,

1:31.7

have been released, and there is hope for more days of pause and more hostages to be released.

1:40.5

Of course, Gaza has also benefited in that hundreds of trucks of supplies have gotten in.

1:47.2

And I just want to point out, had Biden listened to his critics, none of this would have happened.

1:55.3

Remember, weeks ago, they were calling for an immediate ceasefire to stop the fighting.

1:59.8

Israel has to stop.

2:01.3

Well, had that occurred, I sincerely doubt any of the hostages would have been released.

2:06.7

And likewise, I don't think Israel would have been inclined to allow truckloads and caravans full of supplies into Gaza.
