Mike Massimino is a former NASA astronaut, professor of mechanical engineering at Columbia University and the senior advisor for space programs at the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum. He received a BS from Columbia University, and MS degrees in mechanical engineering and in technology and policy, as well as a PhD in mechanical engineering, from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He joins the show to discuss his new book, Moonshot: A NASA Astronaut’s Guide to Achieving the Impossible, in which he details how he overcame challenges and roadblocks both in his pursuit of becoming an astronaut, and throughout his career. We explore concepts that we can all apply to our own lives regardless of our circumstances, including “one in a million is not zero,” embracing adversity, and marveling at the miracle of life. He also shares his perspective about life on earth, having been in space multiple times, and so much more.
