Summary

We stretched the ketones-as-robot-butt metaphor to its limits for this awesome episode! The main topic was a new study measuring fatigue resistance in marathons. Athletes completed lab tests prior to a marathon, with final results correlating with different attributes. Unfortunately, the athletes weren’t fueling during the protocol. What is this, 2005?!

We broaden it out for conclusions that apply to everyone. Fatigue resistance without carbs is a stupid human trick, and there’s no need to play that game.

And this one was full of our favorite topics! Other topics: Megan’s return to the site of her heart issues 4 years ago, David’s scooter debut on the path to going pro, SiS Beta Recovery, the weird science of CurraNZ, how the New York City marathon was influenced by high carb approaches, high carb taking over the roads, the UCI’s strange declaration on ketones, mileage ranges in training plans, how training philosophy changes for outliers, dealing with unintentional underfueling, introducing the uphill treadmill, Megan’s field hockey and track history, and doubles.

We love you all! Huzzah!

Welcome to the SummerKall Play podcast. We are so happy to do with you today. Happy Tuesday. It's Tuesday. And I got some deep brain flow going on in this Tuesday. Deep brain flow. I have no idea what you're talking about. Just take a guess. Take a guess. Flow brings to mind the menstrual cycle? No. That's your brain goes there. You're like the one thing I can think of. That's all I got.

0:23.4

No, the opposite.

Legos. Legos. Okay. So Leo got a Lego for his birthday this weekend at age three. My brother very generously sent us a 221 piece Lego. Oh no. For a three-year-old. And I was like, am I going to have to send him a drum set back for his twins? Yeah, all 221 pieces are perfect for choking on for our 10-month-old. And it was 6-plus. So, I mean, 6-plus Leo's 3. But you, you're 35. Oh, and I was pumped. I wasn't sure. Actually, I did not have high confidence going into this. And neither did you. I don't think you believed in either Leo or I. No, because you had to follow instructions. And this instruction book was huge. This looked like Lord of the Rings. Yeah, actually, and Leo did flip ahead to page 75 and was like, we put the wheels on first. But there was something about doing Legos again that activated like a deep part of my brain and And I'm feeling it. You liked it? I liked it. Yeah. I kind of want to, I think before a race, I would love to construct a big Lego set because I feel like it would be very calming for my brain. I hear it's meditative. Yeah. A lot of people, there's Lego adults I've read about that these 18 plus Lego sets are wild, right? like way too advanced to us. Also much cost a small fortune too. Yeah, probably pretty expensive. But if we got six plus, we could totally do this. You know what the next sponsor of the podcast should be? Lego. The Lego Corporation. What are we going to build first? If we could build anything. If we could make anything a Lego, what would we build?

1:44.6

A dump truck. Yeah. And by that, I mean, a butt. Yeah. Actually, no, it's just a dump truck and put a bunch of gels back there. Yeah. And back it up. Oh, perfect. So it's like a metaphorical Lego set. Uh-huh. Yeah. Yeah. Got to back up the dump truck. Okay, we have the best episode for you today. we're going to start by talking about Megan's return to the site of her health setback a few years ago.

2:02.7

A new study on black current extract and maybe a little bit of a review there. A study on fatigue resistance in marathons. Then a news rundown, including high carb at the New York City Marathon. The UCI's weird ketones declaration. Can't wait to talk about that one. And lots more. And then a Q&A on mileage ranges and training plans, coaching freaks. So like when we're coaching freaks, not saying that we are freaks who coach. Underfueling workouts, uphill treadmill workouts, and whatever else we get to. Okay, the questions were popping this week. They were popping off. I don't know if it was my Lego brain state, but I was rooting them this morning and I was like, We must get to all of these. Yeah, unfortunately. We have a lot of topics to get to. We do.

2:37.0

And a lot of good science, too. it was my Lego brain state, but I was rooting them this morning and I was like, we must get to all of these.

2:34.3

Yeah, unfortunately, we have a lot of topics to get. We do and a lot of good science too. The thing I want to get to before your run at Walker Ranch is right before we started the podcast, you said, you looked at me, I'm shirtless right now, but wearing my dress pants and my flies down and you said, that's a human convertible.

2:52.3

It's a good vibe.

2:53.2

I'm assuming, too, you're not wearing underwear. wearing my dress pants and my flies down and you said, that's a human convertible.

2:52.3

It's a good vibe. I'm assuming, too, you're not wearing underwear. So it's very much. It's a

2:56.5

convertible that's feeling a lot of wind. That's true, actually. I haven't worn underwear in so many

3:01.5

years. I just don't understand the purpose of underwear. In fact, I think it's one of the main

3:06.1

ways we need to tear down the system.

3:07.5

Yeah. I don't know anything about economics, but I do know about underwear theory and underwear is

3:13.5

useless. I feel like there's reduce, reuse, recycle. Yeah. To add an extra bit like, you know.

3:18.7

Reduce, reuse, recycle, fuck underwear. Yeah, exactly. Okay. So let's talk in a more serious way about the run you did on

3:25.3

Saturday. You drove from our house 45 minutes up to Walker Ranch, which is really significant

3:30.3

because what year was it? 2021, I imagine. Almost exactly around this time of year, 2021. Yeah, we were going up there

3:36.8

a lot as you were about to do your first golden ticket race at the Bandera 100K in January,

3:41.5

and you were running out of your mind so, so well. And then all of a sudden, you weren't running out of your mind. I didn't really know what was going on, but what did you feel at the time? So we were doing, we spent a lot of weekends up in Walker Ranch. It was kind of our go-to place. Like those drills are somewhat brutal up there.

3:56.7

It's an eight mile loop.
