Summary

This weekend, we stepped into the fire at the Javelina 100 Mile to chase a golden ticket back to the Western States 100. This episode is the full story of the race, which ended with a golden ticket in 2nd place (behind Will Murray’s astounding course record), 27 minutes faster than last year’s win.

The main discussion is about why the golden ticket presentation ended with a twist. David handed the golden ticket to Canyon Woodward, who finished less than 2 minutes back in 3rd place. Canyon deserves it. Passing it to him was more special than any race. We break it all down while it’s all fresh in our sleep-deprived minds.

The 2025 Javelina 100 Mile might change ultrarunning forever. The times for men and women obliterated the old records, showing that the same trends we’re seeing at shorter races (mostly involving high carb allowing athletes to push hard from mile 1) apply at 100 miles too. This sport ain’t seen nothing yet.

The new goal is to go for another golden ticket in early 2026. If I'm lucky enough to do it again and have Willy Wonka ask me if I accept, I'll say yes without hesitating...

Or at least that's the current plan. If this year has taught us anything, it's that life has a way of laughing at big plans in the most beautiful and life-affirming ways.

We love you all! HUZZAH!

Happy Tuesday. It's Tuesday. And I'm going to my arms on this Tuesday. Going to your arms. That was a theme of our weekend. So I know exactly what you're talking about. I'm bringing just that arm swag throughout daily life. So yesterday in the airport, it was Monday. We were coming back from Havillina. And I was on that

0:21.4

moving walkway that makes you feel exactly like Jim Wamsley. And I turn around and you are back

0:27.5

there just all arms walking maybe one mile an hour and I was like, oh, that's rough. Yeah. Yeah.

My body got pretty wrecked this weekend, maybe more than it ever has, especially my feet. So as you were going through the airport and we were still parenting, got to use the arms for everything I can. And it aligns with what happened at Havillina at Mile 66, where, or 72 maybe, actually a little later in that, where I went to my arms and all of a sudden unlocked something I didn't know was there.

So all this time, Megan, it's been our little T-Rex arms that pushed the way forward.

1:00.1

I feel like we need that in life right now.

1:01.8

You probably did a slowest known time from the gate to the baggage claim to our car.

1:06.9

And it's like we got to unleash the beast that you felt at mile 72.

1:12.4

But David, I'm excited for this podcast. I'm excited to get into that because I don't know if you have ever come back from like

1:17.9

the true depths of the pancake and like zombie status. And you did at Havelina. It was the arms.

1:24.6

I saw some things. I learned some things. We're going to share all that on this

1:27.8

episode. So let's just get to the roadmap, get right into it. So this is everything about the

1:32.5

hobolina 100 mile, everything that went down, including like the big story from it, both for us

1:37.7

and maybe as it relates to like Western States next year, which is I gave up my golden ticket to third place,

Canyon, Woodward. We're going to walk through where that decision came from, how hard it was to make. And some of the misgivings even now, I mean, I'm very happy about it, but at the same time, it wasn't just a straightforward, obvious thing to do. And so, yeah, this is going to be such a fun episode. Well, as we were driving here to record our podcast, we were talking and you're like, what do you think is the financial cost of giving up a golden ticket? And so I'm excited to get into that. But you know what? Do you know what's cooler than the financial cost of a golden ticket? What? Just being a fucking beast and the swag of it all. And I was standing there on Sunday watching you give up that golden ticket. And it was so obviously the right call.

And so obviously reflects the morals that you have as a human and, you know,

our values together in swap in this coaching business.

2:27.1

And I was just like, oh, David.

2:28.8

Well, maybe we shouldn't bury it at the end.
