This is the Bamao podcast with Marty Solomon. I'm his co-host, Brent Billings. Today, I'm joined by Reid Dent to discuss a story about Mary and Martha and Jesus, which also happens to contain an episode about the death and resurrection of Lazarus.

0:21.2

Oh, yeah. Yeah, yeah. That's what I think. I think that this is more a story about Mary and Martha than it is about Lazarus, or at least that's the way that I'm reading it today, this time.

0:36.2

I do have some questions about Lazarus. Is this one of those double jeopardy sort of things where he dies and everybody mourns for four days and then, and then, you know, he's raised, but then he dies again later.

0:49.8

And it's like, oh, we already mourned. He's good. Are you are you trying to, are you trying to spoil my whole thing? So I'm a big fan of

0:58.8

considerate like Ecclesiastes says the death is the end of every man and the wise take it to heart. And that's a lot of what I like to think and talk about.

1:07.8

And it occurs to me like you guys know he's going to die again, right? Like Lazarus isn't still walking around on the earth. He's he's going to die again. So is this just like a trick that's being pulled or something, but no,

1:22.8

did they know he was going to die again? That's a great question. I don't know. But we know that he has died. Well, I think we know maybe he's living in a cave somewhere, but I, I don't suspect that to be true. I assume that he is now dead dead.

1:36.8

Lazarus is the basis for Marvel's eternal or something like that. Well, let me ask you to reinvent himself in every culture. Speaking of genius pop culture. Do you know who Carmen is?

1:49.8

Yeah. Carmen, Carmen, the Christian singer from well, he was sort of a skit maker slash singer from the 80s and 90s and doesn't he have this whole like Lazarus come forth.

2:03.8

Thing in one of his songs. I don't know. That's part of what that's what pops into my mind. I've been poisoned. That's what I'm thinking about when I think of Lazarus.

2:10.8

I don't know enough to actually say one way or the other if that is true.

2:14.8

Lazarus is a very, I think famous name. It's a famous incident from the scriptures, which is interesting because Lazarus other than this story is not really a prominent character at all in the gospels.

2:30.8

But I guess we'll get into that. So yeah, we're in John 11. I guess if you want to just dive in and we can we can kind of get going.

2:37.8

Now a man named Lazarus was sick. He was from Bethany, the village of Mary and her sister Martha. This Mary whose brother Lazarus now lay sick was the same one who poured perfume on the Lord and wiped his feet with her hair, which is a fascinating aside as that has not actually happened yet.

2:57.8

Yes, so the sisters sent word to Jesus. Lord, the one you love is sick, which is also super interesting because we're in the gospel of John.

3:09.8

And that is a phrase that is typically used for John by himself.

3:16.8

Yeah, so yeah, you know, there are a lot of these names in this first few verses. They're interesting. These people, the place, there, there seems to be more to them than meets the eye.

3:31.8

That's a good observation. The one you love is sick. It seems like Jesus is actually really close with these not just Lazarus, but also Mary and Martha.

3:42.8

Like later in the chapter, they remark, look how he, he loved them. And Bethany seems to have been a place that Jesus frequented. He goes back and forth between there in Jerusalem a number of times.

3:55.8

It's, yeah, he seems to be close to these people. And yet, as I said before, Lazarus is not somebody who appears. He actually doesn't appear in any of the other gospels. Here's observation number one.

4:09.8

There are no stories about Lazarus in Matthew, Mark, or Luke other than a noteworthy parable that Jesus tells in Luke, Luke 16. He tells the story. Do you remember any of about that one?

4:25.8

Rent any of the highlights of the parable of Lazarus and the rich man.
