This is Joe Wong. Welcome to the Trapset. During the age of social distancing, we're recording remotely and releasing extra episodes. Today's guest is Ryan Katner, also known as Honus Honus, keyboardist, vocalist, and creative leader of the band Man Man.

Dreamhunting in the Valley of the In Between, the band's ambitious new double album, was released by subpop earlier this month.

Ryan spoke to me from his home in Los Angeles.

Did you grow up in Philadelphia?

I went to art school there and started my band.

I started a man man there.

Where did you grow up?

My father was in the Air Force, so we moved every three years.

Where did you go to high school?

I went to high school in Montgomery, Alabama.

How was it?

It was, you know, it was quite an experience, especially not growing up in Montgomery, Alabama.

I mean, when I was a senior, they still had the Confederate flag flying on the state capitol.

Wow.

It's pretty wild.

And, you know, they try to bring back chain gangs, too, for one.

I think either my junior or my senior year.

So you'd be driving down the highway, and you'd see a chain gang working on the side of the highway.

Yeah, I think they ruled it inhumane, so they stopped doing it.

When you see people chained up together on the side of the road.
