A very good and a very joyful Thanksgiving to you all. I sure hope you were surrounded by friends and family who love you today.

Or if nothing else, the memories of those folks who perhaps have passed on, but no doubt love you still.

And that is what I would like to share with you today, why I am so thankful for my family, both those here and those in heaven. In my case, I've got a

pretty incredible family and a family story. It's one that actually helped to build this nation.

And as I'm about to share with you this morning, it's a reminder, I think, of how important

it is to be thankful for our ancestors,

for their sacrifice, their tenacity, for their fight to make this country exceptional.

After all, it is because of them that we are here. We can enjoy this day of thanks.

So let's do that. And let me share with you my family's journey and why I give them thanks.

To do this, come with me this morning

to the very earliest days of this nation before it was even a nation at all. We go to Massachusetts

this morning to the late 1600s. A ship arrived from England in the latter part of that century

with one of my ancestors on it, although which one? We're not quite sure. Here's why.

In the year 1787, a baby was born in Massachusetts named Jephtha Wright, but the names of

his parents and grandparents who, of course, crossed the Atlantic.

They were never recorded in the family Bible.

But baby Jeptha was raised by somebody, clearly.

We believe through the magic of DNA that that was a woman named Thankful, which, what a great

name and relatively common at the time, by the way.
