Summary

To quote Alan Watts, “If you want to understand the metaphysical, then deeply study the physical.” This musings explores the principle that, hidden in the patterns of physiology and ecology, is the operating system of the universe, the Tao, the course of nature. Commusings is our format where we take a moment to think deeply on the topics of spirituality, philosophy, and culture. Welcome to the Commian podcast. My name is Jeff Krasno. Over the last few months, I have

0:11.1

interviewed a host of doctors, including David Perlmutter, Roger Schwell, William Lee, Zach Bush,

0:17.7

Stacey Clutz, Mark Hyman, and Stephen Gundry, and I have episodes queued up with

0:22.9

Robin Berzin and Kara Fitzgerald. This has obliged me to moonlight as a molecular biologist. I have

0:32.2

spent countless hours reading books, clinical trial data, and scientific papers in order to be an educated

0:40.9

and prepared interlocutor. For months, this concentrated focus on medical science bred a mild resentment

0:51.4

because I really just wanted to be reading Alan Watts. Now if you are not aware of the

0:57.9

British philosopher, while you are now, Watts wrote and lectured brilliantly on Eastern

1:05.2

religions in the 1950s and 60s, and we will soon be featuring a Watts program on Commune.

1:11.6

Now, there is nothing, I mean really nothing, I'd rather do, than hike the canyons

1:17.6

and listen to Watts's signature ramblings on the Dow.

1:22.6

In one lecture, he uttered something that landed so profoundly in me.

1:26.6

He said, if you want to understand the metaphysical, then deeply study the physical.

1:34.8

This one turn of phrase changed the entire tenor of my research into systems biology.

1:42.3

Now, right there, hidden in the patterns of physiology and ecology

1:46.8

was the operating system of the universe, the Tao, the course of nature. Now, of course,

1:54.2

by definition, one can never put their finger fully on it. You just get a glimpse, and then it's all

2:00.2

forgotten. But today's episode is an early,

2:03.6

perhaps somewhat premature, peek into an evolving body of work that imagines Watts as a physician type.

2:13.1

It's titled The Course of Nature.

2:28.6

Music titled The Course of Nature. So in this exhortation, I will unveil the foundational intelligence of the universe.

2:37.0

Don't trust anyone that makes that claim.
