Summary

New course record at the Leadville 100 Miler in 15:12:30, 14 minutes ahead of last year. What just happened?! We are still processing it all, and this episode shares every detail while it’s all fresh in our sleep-deprived minds.

2 weeks ago, David said there was zero chance that he was going to race Leadville. He was still processing the very public failure at Western States. He felt like he just wasn’t ready.

Megan had other ideas. This episode tells the story of a surreal day that still seems a bit like an impossible dream that came to life, including sharing the final 23 miles together.

David would have estimated the chances of this day at 1 in 10,000. But maybe love changes the odds in ways that science can’t always account for.

Also, Megan predicted the exact time down to the minute. Because of course she did.

We love you all so much. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for being there for the full journey.

And remember: failure is cool.

Welcome to the Some Work All Play podcast. We are so happy to do with you today. Happy Tuesday. It's Tuesday. And David, what the heck just happened? I am mind-blown. Yeah, yeah, it's kind of weird. Yeah, I don't know like to say. How? Why, our listeners are probably just as mind-blown as we we are because no one knew.

0:21.1

You stepped up and did the thing.

0:23.0

That was a Megan decision, by the way.

0:25.2

So to everyone listening, we love you so much.

0:27.7

And you might have seen that this weekend was the Leadville 100-mileer,

0:31.8

which we went back to for the second year in a row.

0:34.4

And so the course record for the second year in a row,

0:36.4

this time, 14 minutes

0:37.9

under last year's performance, which seems utterly unthinkable. Like if I had, high five.

0:43.7

That's insane. I was thinking about it. And if I had to put odds on it before the race, maybe one in a

0:50.5

thousand for me of this being possible. Like I don't know what just happened. And so

0:56.2

just filled with immense gratitude for you, Megan, most of all, you're the only reason I was out

1:01.1

there for our listeners, for everything that you've done since the Western States 100K, which was

1:06.6

such a hard experience, not just the race, but the aftermath of it. And, you know, the fundamental shift in identity that's happened. And, you know, I hit this start line really, really happy and peaceful, but not very confident. And I just love you all so much. And people out there, you're like, what just happened? People are like, we agree. I had athletes, was coaching athletes that like went on camping trips and came back on Monday morning

1:27.8

and we're just like, what the fuck?

1:29.4

There's people listening to this podcast right now who are not on social media and have no

1:32.8

idea this just happened, but are like avid podcast listeners that are like, why didn't you tell us?

1:37.3

Well, two episodes ago, and this was entirely genuine.

1:40.6

We had a discussion on the podcast about Leadville and the fact that like you really

1:45.2

did not feel ready for it. And I kind of agreed at that point actually. And it took a couple,

1:51.0

like we'll get into this. I had a few events in the coming days. And then I was like,
