to rethink welfare cuts announced in the spring statement.

absolutely fundamental. But first, the government has denied that it's rushing through benefits cuts

after a Liberal Democrat said that 150,000 carers could lose money

under changes made by the Chancellor in her spring statement.

Yesterday, Rachel Reeve set out plans to cut the welfare bill by just under £5 billion as part of a drive to meet her self-imposed borrowing rules.

Among the changes, tougher assessments for those claiming the disability benefit, personal independence payment or PIP, which is designed to help with the costs of a long-term condition.

Some PIP claims allow the person looking after them to qualify for another benefit,

carers allowance. But the Lib Dem's work and pension spokesman, Steve Darling,

said the changes announced by Rachel Reeves yesterday would see around 150,000 carers

lose the payment, and he quoted an anti-poverty charity.
