My father came to America in 1946 at the age of just 19 years old.

He'd somehow survived growing up during WW2 in that era in Poland,

and he tried his best to make a life for himself once peace arrived, but it proved impossible.

So instead, he traveled 300 miles from his hometown to the northern port to Gondanks,

where he hopped on a ship and sailed all the way over to Ellis Island.

He made his way to Chicago, at my mother, and the rest is history.

When I was growing up, he seemed very proud of our Polish heritage, and meal times would often feature a lot of Polish food like kilbasa, pierogies, and Gawomki.
