I'm Erin Scala and here's our show today. Oh, Freulae sits in a strategic location near the Alps and the sea, two possible entryways to the rest of Italy.

As such, it has historically been an important stop on trade routes

and has also been a region of political turmoil

as various powers have fought to control this special location throughout the centuries.

Some of the early settlers in the region were from Greece.

When later Freelie was part of the Roman Empire,

Julius Caesar parked many troops in the region.

With the fall of the Roman Empire, Attila the Hun tore down cities and caused general chaos,

and the area remained in poverty until a Lombard king founded the

Duchy of Freuli.

As a stop on the spice route, traders brought salt, spices, wax, and silks from Byzantium to Venice.

Grape vines too came from modern day turkey and Greece,

and French grapes also came in from the north.

In the Middle Ages, freely became a grapes also came in from the north.

and they provided wine for the luxury merchants who carried cinnamon, cardamom, ginger, and pepper.
