I've attached some photos, which we will post on Twitter, that I was given by my nan,

who sadly passed away in 2009.

They were my grandad's and have been untouched in his bedside drawer for approximately

sixty years.

My grandad, Sergeant Dennis Ashton of the Reini, spent his war in Egypt, Italy and France.

He arrived in Normandy on D-Day Plus One and was in the beach recovery unit.

At some point after this he was guarding some German POWs and apparently befriended a German

soldier.

When the war ended and he was demobbed, this German chap came home with grandad back to
