century ago today, on Sunday the 31st of August, 1997, we awoke to news that Diana, Princess

of Wales had been involved in a car accident in Paris during the early hours. As the story unfolded, we learned that the

princess was critically injured in the Pondalamar underpass. We later heard that she had died of her injuries.

Her companion, Dodie Fired, and driver Henri Paul were pronounced dead at the scene. The princess's bodyguard,

Trevor Reese Jones, was the only survivor.

Many of us remember exactly where we were when we heard. The mass outpouring of grief that followed was on a scale rarely witnessed before or since.

The emotional reaction was a global event with floral tributes, books of condolence, and candles

lit in her memory across the world. Thousands of bouquets were laid on the lawns of Kensington

Palace, where Diana lived. Her funeral the following Saturday, the 6th of September,

was an event of such magnitude that it was watched by an estimated 2.5 billion people.

The last journey of the people's princess, as her hearse made the two-hour ride

through the streets of London to Westminster Abbey, was heartbreaking.
