How do you know if someone truly belongs on your team?

In episode 266 of At The Table, Patrick Lencioni and Cody Thompson review the surprising origin of The Ideal Team Player and why its simple framework continues to resonate years later. You’ll learn how the combination of humility, hunger, and smarts defines great team members—and what happens when one is missing. You’ll walk away with practical ways to hire better, develop your people, and build a stronger, healthier team culture.

Topics explored in this episode:

(00:02:23) Origins of Humble, Hungry, Smart

  • Pat explains how the three values emerged from real-world leadership experience.
  • The framework gained traction as clients recognized its universal relevance.

(00:07:24) Why the Model Works So Powerfully

  • The simplicity of the framework makes it easy to apply immediately in teams.
  • The combination of all three traits, not just one, is what drives true effectiveness.

(00:11:14) Breaking Down the Three Traits

  • Humility, hunger, and smarts are defined with practical examples.
  • The discussion highlights common misunderstandings, especially around “smart.”

(00:21:55) The Dangers of Missing One Trait

  • The team explains the “accidental mess-maker,” “lovable slacker,” and “skillful politician.”
  • Each type shows how the absence of a single virtue can damage team health over time.

Hey, this is Pat Lincone and we're about to start the At the Table podcast. First of all, this is going to be a little longer than most of our podcast because it's really rich. There's a lot to go over. We're going to be talking about my book, The Ideal Team Player, and we're going to talk about how it can transform an employee in an organization, a culture, you're hiring, your development of your people. However, it wasn't until the very end that we talked about something I really want you to know about. And that's this. We have a new assessment called the

0:24.8

ideal team player assessment. It's fantastic. It costs so little. And it can really change an

0:30.7

employee, a team, and a manager's ability to help their employees. Cody, any other things you

0:35.1

want to say about the assessment? Yeah, it's simple.

0:38.0

It takes about 10 minutes to take. And then it gives you three coaching emails, like a series of

0:42.8

three emails based on how you score the lowest between Humble, Hungry, Smart. And it's going to give

0:48.6

you some tips, some activities, some conversation prompts to help you develop in your lowest area.

0:53.5

It's an exercise we use with almost every team that we consult to. We just productized it, put it in a short $25 assessment. So anybody can take advantage of that, whether it's personal, professional on a team, a whole culture. It would be a great tool. This is the latest product that we've come out with. We think it's fantastic. We haven't marketed it yet. And we're going to start doing that now.

1:11.6

So I hope you like that. And I hope you like this podcast, which is long, but I think it's very rich. Thanks for being a follower and God bless. When you're building a team, the first thing you have to do is make sure the people you're hiring deserve to be on the bus because they're a team player. Before you think about what role they're

1:27.6

supposed to have or how to build the team, make sure that all the people that are there are

1:32.4

generally predisposed to these attributes because if somebody is really, really lacking in one

1:38.3

of them, that means they're probably not going to fit. When you're pretty predisposed to all three,

1:42.5

it changes everything. And when you hire people that have all three, man, it's easy to bring them into the organization. It's easy to find a place for them. It's easy for the team to gel. So that's what this is all about. Welcome to At the Table, the podcast that lives at the intersection between culture and teamwork and organizational health and a whole bunch of other things. I don't know what the last one was. I say go with it. It does. There's a whole bunch of other things in here. Yeah, okay. Let's just keep going then. I can't remember what else is about. Organization health, teamwork, leadership, leadership, and leadership. Culture is even in there. Culture. I said culture, I think, in the first time. Yeah. You guys know what the

2:18.1

podcast is about. I'm Pat. This is Cody. We are here to talk about what today, Cody? The book that

2:24.2

almost wasn't. I'm super excited about this. I think this might have been Matt's idea. We're going to

2:29.5

talk about one of our books that we haven't talked about in a long time that that actually sold more last

2:35.9

a couple weeks ago than the five dysfunctions of a team which is usually the highest seller

2:39.5

book of ours and it's the ideal team player and we were not I wasn't even going to write a book

2:46.7

about this and Cody you remember because you would just start at the company this book is 10 years old. So we started working on it probably about 11 years ago. March was my start date. So this is my 11 year anniversary. So I was here for the development of ITP. Well, happy anniversary. You know what you get for 11 years? I don't know. It's like made out of of ideal team player? That's right, Cody. That's right. It'll be coming to you in the mail.

3:09.6

So the Ideal Team Player, it came about because we came up with these three values.

3:17.0

Before I started the table group in another company where I worked, I was the head of this

3:21.0

department. And Tracy and Karen and Amy and a whole bunch of other folks
