Summary

Jen is joined by author and veteran political consultant Stuart Stevens to take a journey through the evolution of the Republican party towards authoritarianism under Trump.  They explain how it became dominated by white grievance and the religious right by forgoing policy solutions that could attract minorities, women, and young people in favor of conspiracy and control.  Jen and Stuart believe it was possible because Republican party leaders capitulated to the MAGA movement for power and the hope of getting their preferred policies without compromise– eroding our democracy.  To save it, they lay out what it will take to reclaim the principles essential to freedom, and make the argument that restoring democracy is the only issue that should decide elections when the alternative is conceding to one party rule.  Will 2024 be the turning point?

Hi, this is Jen Rubin, and this is Jen Rubin's Green Room. We are at the start of another week,

0:17.7

and we have a new speaker of the House who can only be described as a white

0:22.7

Christian nationalist who thinks the Bible, not the Constitution, is his guide to governance.

0:30.0

This is dangerous. This is anti-constitutional. This is un-American. But that is what the Republican

0:36.4

Party is these days.

0:38.6

And our guest today is going to talk about this.

0:42.0

It's interesting that at a time that our attention is very much in foreign policy

0:48.3

because of events in Ukraine, events in Israel, that we still are in a crisis here at home, a crisis of democracy.

0:58.3

And in 20-some-odd days, the spending is going to run out. We're going to be faced with another

1:04.3

government shutdown. The Republicans, who for reasons that really are inexplicable other than in their attachment to authoritarian thugs,

1:14.2

want to separate aid from Israel from aid to Ukraine so they can dump the latter.

1:21.8

And we maintain a position in which every election in America is now a matter of do or die. Every election is,

1:31.0

are we going to have democracy or are we going to have a bunch of authoritarian thugs running the show?

1:37.1

And until the Republican Party fundamentally changes, every election is going to be this way.

1:43.8

I would like to think that Democrats will win every election for now, because they are the party of democracy. But of course, that's impossible. And even when they win, of course, Republicans don't necessarily recognize that they've won. So you can't have a governing body. You can't have a Congress. You can't have

2:03.6

an effective executive. If one party is continually agitating for nihilism, for authoritarianism,

2:11.0

you've got to solve this problem. And I would like to think the Republicans are ready to step

2:15.3

away from Trump and Trumpism, but there is no sign,

2:19.4

zero sign. They are ready to do that. And our guests today, Stuart Stevens, is the perfect

2:25.4

person to explain this to us. Stuart, like I was, was Republican for many years. He was a consultant,

2:33.4

the senior strategist, to the Mitt Romney campaign.

2:36.5

But once Donald Trump was elected, the wool was pulled from his eyes, as it was for me.
