Hello, I'm Mandy Baker and this is the Today in Parliament podcast for Monday the 26th of January,

where the Home Secretary announces a crime-fighting revolution.

It is time we had the bravery to pursue a new mode of protection and a new model of

policing. The Conservative stymie controversial plans to give up sovereignty over the Chegos Islands.

They were hoping to force through in the House of Lords their surrender bill, giving away

territory, handing over £35 billion to a foreign government, allied to China and betraying Chagosians.

And on the eve of Holocaust Memorial Day,

is it time to rethink how we educate people about anti-Semitism?

The UK has invested heavily in museums, memorials, archives,

survivor testimony and learning centres.

But these efforts have not demonstrably shifted attitudes.

The Home Secretary has told the Commons that her plans for policing

are the most significant changes for 200 years.

In that time, Shabana Mahmood said the world had changed considerably,

but policing had not. The most eye-catching

measure would be the creation of a national police service. At first, this would set standards

and lift the administrative burden from local forces. But in time, it will draw in all national

crime-fighting responsibilities, including counter-terrorism policing, serious organised crime

and fraud. This will ensure local forces are no longer distracted by national responsibilities,

while at the same time creating an elite national force, expert at fighting the ever more
