Summary

John and Steve just finished a livestream on two of Steve's favorite Kung Fu films, Jackie Chan's Drunken Master and Drunken Master 2 (Or Legend of the Drunken Master in the US)

Drunken Master is the film that made Jackie Chan a star and for pure athleticism, inventiveness and number of fight scenes it simply can't be beat.

When Jackie Chan returned to the role of Wong Few-Hung 15 years later he might have lost a step in terms of physicality (all evidence to the contrary) but he has definitely gained in experience, resources and time. The fight choreography in this film is among the most brilliant, detailed and impressive ever put on film.

Hi, this is Steve.

0:02.0

In our last live show, I mentioned that there were some episodes of the cinephiles that

0:05.4

I was less proud of than others, and one of our patrons wanted to know why.

0:10.2

So in this week's short, exclusively available on patreon.com slash the cinephiles, John and

0:16.1

I attempt to answer just that.

0:18.0

Now, you'll need to be a cinephile's patron to hear the whole conversation, but here's

0:22.2

a sample.

0:23.2

Two of the things that I find most difficult to edit are foreign films, because I can't

0:27.8

easily cut the dialogue and long fight scenes, because while they might look spectacular,

0:32.9

they don't always sound that interesting on a podcast.

0:35.7

So when John and I started talking about covering what might be my favorite martial arts

0:39.9

film of all time, Jackie Chan's Drunken Master 2, I was worried, because it definitely

0:45.6

contains both long fight scenes and a language that is in English, and yes, I would recommend

0:51.4

watching the original Hong Kong version in Cantonese rather than the American recut.

0:57.5

So John's solution, let's do it live, which sounded good to me, however it also felt

1:02.8

weird to jump right into the sequel skipping the groundbreaking first film.

1:08.3

So this Sunday at 4pm on our YouTube channel, John and I will be discussing both Drunken

1:14.0

Master 1 and 2, and as I've already mentioned right now on patreon.com slash the cinephiles,

1:21.5

you could be listening to a brand new short on where the cinephiles goes wrong.

1:27.3

Once again, that's a live show on Drunken Master 1 and 2, this Sunday at 4pm Pacific Time

1:32.6

on our YouTube channel, and yes, if the only version you can find is the American legend

1:38.1

of the Drunken Master, it's still well worth your time.
