Summary

This is a repost of the May 2022 patron-only video about Marvel's Spider-Man: No Way Home and how the multiverse theme not only plays in with postmodernism but also how it can be used to return to a traditional vision. When Marvel started their multiverse idea, this is, of course, an idea that has been there in comics for a very long time, but when they put it into the movie world, I became a little worried, I guess more than worried.

0:11.4

I had the impression that they were going to use this multiverse notion to bring about, you know, the kind of diversity, inclusion, equity stuff that is so popular now,

0:22.7

and that they would use it as a way to replace characters with everything that is kind of

0:29.6

in line with the current political thinking. And we had a little bit of glimpse of that where

0:35.2

in the Loki series, they seem to be using the

0:37.7

multiverse notion to replace the male Loki with the female Loki and as the

0:41.5

series goes on you know this female Loki becomes more and more prominent and at

0:46.5

the end it seems like the series is about her or something and you saw that also

0:50.7

in the animated what if series where every episode seems to be about

0:54.7

something like that.

0:56.2

And so I was, of course, thinking that it was kind of a postmodern tool because the whole

1:01.4

multiverse idea is a kind of postmodern tool in itself.

1:05.8

But then I was quite surprised when I saw the recent Spider-Man movie No Way Home. And in the Spider-Man

1:13.2

movie No Way Home, I saw something that I've been thinking about for a very long time,

1:18.1

that I've been meditating on, which is the possibility of turning post-modernism against itself

1:24.1

or rather transforming the chaos and the fragmentation and the meta awareness

1:29.1

and the irony and the comment upon comment

1:31.4

that you find in postmodernism

1:33.0

and turning it into something like

1:34.7

an apocalyptic type of storytelling.

1:37.1

So I think that it's surprisingly enough

1:39.0

in the No Way Home movie, we get a glimpse of that.
