What I'm describing is anti-Semitism. It's a new form of anti-Semitism and with new

characteristics, but it's in the nature of anti-Semitism to hijack the latest current

discourse in the medieval times Jews were hated in the language of religion. In the

20th century, it was the language of pseudo-science. But what's on the art is political rhetoric, is

the rhetoric of social justice of anti-racism. And that's where you find Israelophobia. That

is where the new anti-Semitism is now finding a foothold.

guest this week, Jake Wallace-Simon's. Jake, welcome to the show. Thank you. Thank you for

me. It's great to have you on. This is your first time on the pod. Some listeners will be

familiar with you as the editor of the Jewish Chronicle, which of course is the world's oldest

Jewish newspaper. And when they listen to this pod, they'll also be familiar with you as the author

of an excellent new book called Israelophobia, the newest version of the oldest hatred and what

to do about it. There is so much in this book, it's packed with information and opinion and analysis

of the extraordinary hostility to Israel that exists in certain sections of society.

So I've got lots of questions I want to ask you, but I want to start off by asking you about the

title of the book, Israelophobia, because you know that's a controversial word. You have a

whole chapter called what is Israelophobia outlining it very clearly. You know what people say.

People say, listen, there's a difference between hating Jews and criticizing Israel. There's a

difference between hating a race of people and hating a nation's state. So how do you define

Israelophobia? And what do you say in response to those people who say, listen,

criticizing countries is what we do in every day discussion.
