Summary

Not one but two of our Cine-Files Patrons chose, the 1993 Merchant/Ivory drama The Remains of the Day for John and Steve to review and we are thrilled that they did. With incredible performances from Anthony Hopkins, Emma Thompson, James Fox, Christopher Reeve and Hugh Great, Remains of the Day is as powerful as it is restrained. It certainly deserved its eight Oscar nominations and in a year without Stephen Spielberg's masterpiece, Schindler's List it would certainly have won, at least, some of them.

If you haven't seen this incredible film you can buy or stream it right here.

Hi, this is Steve.

0:03.6

One of the things we do on the cinephiles is what we call the play-by-play.

0:07.3

This is the chronological journey through the film where we try to give you some sense

0:12.0

of what is going on in the story.

0:14.5

Often these include descriptions of life and death struggles, important decisions, emotional

0:18.9

confrontations, true love, and sometimes true tragedy.

0:23.6

In other words, the events of most films are by necessity, pretty dramatic, and the play-by-play

0:29.4

naturally reflects that.

0:31.4

However, when it came to the remains of the day, the play-by-play was almost entirely

0:36.3

devoid of drama.

0:38.1

Where's the emotion and left behind dust-pins, the cleanliness of the alcove by the breakfast

0:43.4

room, a book of sentimental love stories, or the words, yes, I'm perfectly alright, in

0:49.6

response to a question of concern.

0:51.8

And yet, despite the stayed intentionally professional exterior, the interior life of

0:57.7

the characters in the remains of the day are as vibrant, emotionally complex, and ultimately

1:03.4

tragic as just about any film we've covered.

1:07.1

In the end, it's the incredible performances of Emma Thompson and Anthony Hopkins, the

1:11.9

delicate direction of James Ivory and Richard Robbins' gorgeous score that managed to convey

1:18.2

a universe of emotion through actions so subtle as to be almost nonexistent.

1:24.9

So if you still haven't seen this brilliant film, you need to take a journey to cinephiles.net

1:30.0

where you can buy or stream remains of the day, along with every other film we've ever

1:35.2

reviewed.
