Summary

In this episode of the universal history series Richard Rohlin and I build on our previous discussion about Groundhog Day and its connection to the Orthodox feast of the Meeting of the Lord in the Temple, which is actually one of four winter feasts (The Entrance of the Theotokos to the Temple, the Nativity, Theophany and finally the Meeting of the Lord in the Temple). Together these four celebrations are a continuation of the Jewish feast of Hanukkah. 0:04.4	And then we try to like write ourselves or fit ourselves into the narrative.
0:07.3	But actually, it's a means of, you could say it's like a more ancient, more old world, more medieval understanding of time in which we're actually participating in the story of salvation in the life of Christ and of his mother, but we're participating
0:22.4	through the natural world. Right. And so that allows this understanding of time, not to just
0:30.1	be something that we larp, not to just be something that like, oh, today is March the 24th.
0:35.6	I guess since we don't know when Jesus was born, I'm going to celebrate Christmas today.
0:39.5	Like there are technically people who will argue that you can do that, but practically speaking, nobody does.
0:45.9	And it's because we all know things don't really work that way.

1:04.0	Hello everybody. I am back with Richard Rowland.
1:16.6	And a lot of people were really fascinated by our last video on Groundhog Day and how it was related to the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord.
1:25.6	And so Richard had the great idea to maybe look actually at the four major winter
1:30.1	feasts of the church, how they are related to light and how they are in a way, a kind of
1:35.8	fulfillment of the Jewish feast of Hanukkah.
1:39.5	And so Richard, go ahead, start us off and I'll follow.
1:42.8	Yeah.
1:43.4	So something I was telling you right before we hit record, right, is that the feast
1:49.9	of the presentation of the Lord or the meeting of the Lord of the Temple or the purification
1:54.1	of the Blessed Virgin Mary, aka Groundhog Day, right?
1:56.6	These are all names that have been used for this particular observance, that it's really the bookend, right, of the kind of the whole winter cycle of the church.
2:07.1	And this is something that gets lost nowadays. I think sometimes because in Western liturgics, there has been kind of this division of like sacred time and ordinary time or
2:20.2	like the pascal cycle and then secular time or, you know, something like that, right? So,
