A lot had happened since the 1988 Olympics in Seoul. This was the first Olympics for Romania competing after the Romanian Revolution in 1989.

It's the first Olympics for the Unified Germany to be competing again together and critically it's the first Olympics

following the formal dissolution of the Soviet Union on December 22nd 1981.
