Last week we started our remaster of Everyone is John.

And I wanted to take a minute to talk before we get to the episode about everyone is John and how it is a capital P problematic game.

You don't need any experience with mental illness to know that everyone is John is not an accurate portrayal of it.

It's cartoonish and easy to argue exploitative.

It plays into toxic ideas of mental illness that are deeply embedded in our culture.

I think everyone is John is a silly manners comedy that can be fun with a lot of groups,

but the theme is pretty bad. We wouldn't be having this introduction if it was called the Mr Bean

RPG or the alien in human skin tabletop experience, but it's not.

Originally I made the first series of everyone is John Lovecraft themed because I wanted it to be supernatural and far from the association with real life mental illness.

These days when I run the game I say John is possessed by demons or ghosts to take it even further away from offensive territory.

I'm sorry to any fans who are hurt by our featuring this game and bringing it back.

I can easily see where it would be exhausting to hear old bad ideas trotted out for the amusement of privileged people.
