Summary

It is 100% unequivocally devastating to lose a loved one. That’s your primary loss in grief. However, you might have also noticed knock-on effects of things you would not have otherwise lost in addition to your loved one. These are called secondary losses.

It's such an important topic and grief, and yet I keep kicking the can. So I'm glad we're

going to get to it today. This might not be a new term to you, secondary loss, but it's such an

important concept, which is why I want to spend some time going through it. So we're going to

talk about what secondary losses are, why they are so important,

and three things that you can do to support yourself when you notice a secondary loss.

So if you've never heard of the idea of a secondary loss, it's really simple.

The primary loss, the main loss,

was the loss of your person. All right, that makes sense. That's the primary loss. And that is, in and of itself, such a huge thing. And in addition to the primary loss, we experience what

are called secondary losses, which are all the other things, we experience what are called secondary losses,

which are all the other things, kind of the knock-on effects of the primary loss.

Things we wouldn't have lost but did because of the primary loss.

So this could be any number of things, but maybe it is the opportunity to watch your late spouse walk your daughter

down the aisle. Right? That's a secondary loss. Maybe it's money, it's income. Maybe it is

relationships. Maybe you had, you know, a lot of, I see this a lot in women who were military

families where their spouse was in the military and they had this huge connection to the military,

but then it's different after the spouse dies. And maybe it was a really important part of their

life, that military connection. Or sometimes it's, you know, somebody was a firefighter and they
