Summary

This audio workshop is an extended excerpt of Charles Eisenstein's Commune course, Political Hope. Our politics run on a mentality of war, and war mentality rests on the story of separation. The problem, as the saying goes, is that if you have a hammer, everything looks like a nail. If our go-to solution is to find the enemy and defeat them by force, we become blind to any other way of solving problems. at once indivisible and yet divided from the world, is a cultural story. Now let's look around. We don't need to strain our eyes

1:13.6

to witness the fraying of our cultural fabric and the erosion of social cohesion. We are living in a

1:20.3

moment of extreme division in which virtually every facet of culture appears to produce binary

opposition. Politically, economically, and

1:29.3

environmentally, we are under stress and pushed to the edges of the branch. Political polarization,

1:35.9

severe income inequality, and environmental collapse feel existential. As Charles pondered all the

world's iniquities, he asked himself this essential question.

1:47.2

What is the origin of the wrongness in the world? Is it greed, laziness, envy, wrath? Is it human

1:56.1

nature itself? Does evolutionary biology mandate that we hoard and kill in the name of self-preservation?

2:03.6

These typical answers felt unsatisfactory. Charles was looking for the ideological substrate that

2:11.1

underwrites her societal dis-ease. He was searching for the root cause behind the symptoms.

2:17.7

Charles found his answer in a story, in a millennia-old mythology that tells us what it is like

to be a self.
