Hello and welcome to the battleground podcast with me Saul David and Patrick Bishop.

0:17.2

Dominating the news this week, of course, was Donald Trump's decisive victory in the US presidential election,

0:23.0

defeating Kamala Harris by, as things stand, 295 electoral college votes to 226, there are still two states to declare.

0:31.8

But he also won importantly Patrick the popular vote by 50.88% to 47.6%. Later in the podcast, we'll be hearing from American

0:40.7

Ukrainian journalist Ascol Prusielnitsky, who was in Washington, D.C. for the vote, and hearing

0:46.0

his response to a Trump presidency with, of course, regard to the war in Ukraine. In a special

0:51.4

emergency podcast on Wednesday, Roger Morehouse and I gave our immediate response

0:56.1

to the Trump victory and the likely consequences for Ukraine and NATO. We were both of the opinion that,

1:02.0

despite fears to the contrary, Trump would not pull America out of NATO and might even shake up

1:07.4

things in a positive sense with regard to Ukraine. There's a big might in that,

1:11.9

of course. But we also felt that it very much depended on who he named as his key foreign policy

1:16.4

and security advisors. Good news if they were hawks like Robert O'Brien, not so good at people less

1:21.8

committed to supporting Ukraine and NATO, like Richard Brunel, were appointed. But Patrick, now the dust has settled.

1:29.0

What's your take on all of this? Well, the dust may have settled, but the picture remains pretty

1:34.4

murky, doesn't it? It's all about Trump's intentions, and we'll learn a lot more when he announces,

1:41.1

as he say, his defence and security team, that is who he picks for the

1:45.1

key jobs to lead as Department of State, events, and who he chooses his national security

1:51.9

advisor. Now, among the names being mooted, you see a quite a broad range of different opinions

1:57.1

on the subject of Ukraine. Asgold, who will be hearing from later, mentions Marco Rubio

2:02.9

as a potential Secretary of State, which potentially might be good news for Ukraine, but then

2:09.2

you've got these others, like you say, like Grinnell, who's being spoken of as a potential

2:13.6

national security advisor, who are of a very different opinion. So we just have to wait and see.
