Hi and welcome to the Squiggly Careers podcast. My name's Sarah Ellis and this week you're going to hear the next in our Ask the Expert series. I'll be talking to two guests, Kim Scott and Tria Bryant about feedback. Kim has pioneered the idea of a feedback approach called radical candor, which I'm sure lots of you

0:21.5

have heard of, maybe even tried out. And this is the idea of how we can challenge directly and

0:28.1

care personally at the same time. Almost a nirvana of feedback, I think, which we all recognise

0:34.0

is probably easier said than done. And Trier and Kim work together as Tria is the

0:40.0

CEO of their company Just Work, which is also the name of Kim's new book. What I particularly

0:45.8

enjoyed about our conversation together is that they don't shy away from tough topics. Things like

0:52.0

what's the impact of power dynamics on effective feedback and how our

0:56.4

bias is conscious or unconscious can affect how we deliver feedback, receive feedback, and just

1:03.1

our understanding of the work that we do and the world of work that we're part of. I found the

1:08.1

conversation with Kim and Trier really insightful and practically useful.

1:13.6

And I think that's because they are a great combination of well thought through really credible research, but also backed up by lots of practical experience based on the organisations that they've worked in as practitioners.

1:27.5

And also the work that they now do with lots of different companies

1:30.7

to apply their work and their thinking.

1:33.6

And they don't over-promise.

1:35.5

You know, they don't say there's a silver bullet that means you'll get this right all of the time,

1:38.7

but they do offer ideas, tools and techniques that I think are helpful for all of us.

1:43.7

So I hope you enjoy the conversation

1:45.1

and I'll be back at the end to say bye. So Kim and Trier, thank you so much for joining us today

1:56.0

on the Squiggly Careers podcast. I'm really looking forward to our conversation. Thanks so much

2:00.7

for having us.

2:01.7

Yeah, excited to be here. Thank you. And so Kim, let's get started and dive straight into

2:07.4

radical candor. What is radical candor? So radical candor is what happens when you care
