Summary

Mentoring is one of the ways we can support other people with their career development. Anyone can be a mentor. It's not a role reserved for 'senior' people or people who have years and years of experience. We can all share our insights and perspectives with other people to help them learn about themselves and their career. This week, Helen and Sarah talk about practical ideas for action to feel confident in your role as a mentor and ensure the time you spend with your mentees is as meaningful as possible.  For more resources and support on this topic, head to www.amazingif.com/listen You can get in touch with Helen and Sarah at helenandsarah@squigglycareers.com Hosted on Acast. Hi, I'm Helen Tupper. And I'm Sarah Ellis. And you're listening to the Squiggly Careers podcast

0:07.0

where each week we come together to talk about a different topic and discuss some practical

0:11.5

ideas and actions to help you find your way through your squiggly world of work. And this

0:16.9

week we're going to be talking about how to be a meaningful mentor. So we've covered before

0:22.8

how to find a mentor, but actually there's not very much out there generally in terms of

0:28.5

research or things that you can read, watch or listen to on how to be a really great mentor,

0:34.7

how to do mentoring that makes a really positive difference. So a good topic to

0:38.9

0:44.0

myths that we thought might be useful to start with. And the first thing we wanted to say is that

0:49.3

everyone can be a mentor. Often we mistake mentors for having to be somebody who is more senior.

0:56.4

Perhaps we think, well, I couldn't be a mentor because what would someone learn from me?

1:01.3

And I think it's starting with the assumption that I think we've got something to learn from

1:05.3

everyone. Everyone has something that they're great at. Everyone has something to offer.

1:10.1

And so I'm really confident,

1:11.5

certainly, that everyone listens to this podcast. You can all be amazing mentors. So this is not about,

1:16.3

oh, this is not for me because I'm not at a certain level yet. The other thing that's really

1:20.0

interesting related to that is that when you do read about mentoring, there is much more

1:25.3

demand than there is supply. So there are more people who want mentors

1:29.4

than there are people mentoring. You know, it's one of those things that comes up quite a lot.

1:33.1

People say, oh, you know, I'd really like a mentor. I think that would be really helpful.

1:36.3

So I don't be afraid to volunteer to say that's something that I'm really happy to do if anyone

1:41.2

would benefit from that. And as a mentor, your job is not to know all
