Summary

Delta raiders. Decades before their famous migrations, the "Sea Peoples" were already active and visible in the eastern Mediterranean; and Ramesses II had his own dealings with these groups. In year 2 of his reign, Ramesses II (Usir-Ma'at-Ra) dealt with a coastal raid by the Sherden, who came from the "islands in the midst" of the sea (which the Egyptians called the "Great Green"). eastern Mediterranean, food shortages, geological disruptions, and mass migrations. From the Egyptian

records, we hear about attacks coming from the Mediterranean and the Near East. These attacks were

caused by a variety of tribes, whom the pharaohs grouped together under an umbrella term.

They called them the Nhaasut en Payim, the foreign peoples of the sea. Today, historians describe these groups as the

sea peoples. The sea peoples are one of the most prominent and mysterious aspects of the

late Bronze Age collapse, a historical catastrophe in which numerous cultures fell to disruption and calamity.

And yet, despite their prominence in that later phase, the sea peoples were not a new phenomenon.
