Welcome to the Commian podcast. This is Jeff Krasno. So I've just returned from a 10-day

ramble up the California coast in a camper van with my daughter Phoebe. We were surveying

universities and crashing at state parks. My time with her is fleeting, so to

maximize and savor it, I imposed van travel, where she would be forced to sit and talk with me

while I weaved up jagged highways in this clumsy box of a vehicle. Now, somewhere near Santa

Barbara, we stumbled upon our mutual affection for the English

philosopher Alan Watts, and over the preceding days, we listened to dozens of lectures on

Buddhism, Taoism, sex and religion, and the illusion of self. After five hours behind the wheel,

I would find myself stir-crazy and began channeling Watts with my best

perceived pronunciation. This provided some decent laughs. When we arrived in Berkeley, we found ourselves

at the old Berkeley City Club, a fabulous ornate building that contained all sorts of libraries,

We came across a grand piano in one of the rooms, and in an Alan Watts-inspired stupor,
