Let's start here.

You are a person who served in the Australian military.

You are an expert encounter and certainty.

We're going to get into that because the broad topic I'd like to focus on you

is this idea of lessons learned from the past 20 years,

how rushes thinking about all these realities.

But let's just start with your military assessment with what is happening

on the ground in Ukraine right now.

Well, the very big picture is that about a week ago,

the Russians threw out the complete playbook that they've been employing for about 20 years.

Right. So we're in a bit of a new world.

For 20 years under Vladimir Putin, the Russians have done incredibly well with this kind

of incremental and big US approach, doing just enough to get what they want,

but not enough to trigger a major response.

And that's worked well for them in a variety of places.

But this time last week, they threw that out the window and went for the jugular

to really try to quickly seize and decapitate the Ukrainian government.

That failed on the first day of the war.
