Hi this is Steve. How do you make a grown man cry? Well if it's a guy my age or

older the answer is probably to put on the 1971 TV movie Brian's, which chronicles the relationship of Hall of Fame Halfback

Gail Sayers and his best friend Brian Piccolo. Now, some of you might think that Brian Song isn't up to the usual cinephiles standards.

After all, this is a 74 minute TV movie, complete with small budget, minimal sets,

and plenty of commercial breaks. And all of that is true.

In fact, when John and I first discussed this movie after the death of Gail Sares a few weeks ago,

both of us were pretty sure it wouldn't make the cut.

Still, I decided it was worth a watch, so Karen and I sat down to check it out,

and both of us, frankly, cried our eyes out.

A few days later, John had pretty much the same experience.

You see, despite its limitations, and they are definitely there, this movie still works,

mostly because of the incredible performances of Billy D. Williams as Sayers and

James Kahn as Brian Piccolo.
