Summary

Gandalf is wise, right? Then why didn't he figure out that the ring was The One Ring sooner? Or why wasn't he more careful? The reasons not only make sense, but expand our understanding of the world of Middle Earth in a brilliant way.

Welcome to the Lord of the Rings lorecast, the show that explores the background of Tolkien's amazing world from the very beginning. beginning. So correct me if I'm wrong, but I have a feeling that most of us have watched the movies,

0:30.9

especially the Lord of the Rings trilogy, more often or at least more recently than we've read

0:36.1

through the books.

0:37.6

Now, of course, that's not everybody, but I have a feeling I'm in the majority here.

0:42.7

I'm more likely to put on the movies again, say, around Christmas time to enjoy them with the

0:48.1

family than I am to crack open a book and read all the way through it again unless I'm in

0:53.1

that particular mood or I'm

0:54.9

researching for the podcast. Now what this means, at least for me, is that oftentimes the parts

1:00.2

of the book that get shaved down for the movies, I'm more likely to remember the details in the

1:06.8

movie. The specifics of the conversation here, for example, as we're getting into this

1:12.0

dialogue between Frodo and Gandalf and Gandalf being sure or finding out for sure that

1:18.7

this is actually the one ring, Frodo's response to that and all of that. Of course, that's

1:23.6

pared down for the movie. You can't have every single piece of dialogue from the book

1:28.3

and not have a movie that would have been twice as long as it actually came out to be.

1:32.3

In these types of situations, something always has to give.

1:35.3

And what that means is the pieces that get cut out, I'm less likely to remember.

1:40.3

And I think that's another one of the benefits of doing one of these very close

1:44.8

readthroughs, is that I get to emphasize for all of you, but also for myself, the pieces that

1:50.7

are typically left out from the movies, or get changed or whatever. And in this section,

1:56.2

we're going over Frodo and Gandalf, and Gandalf is answering Frodo's questions for the first time

2:02.2

in years. And the one thing I noticed here, before we get to the actual putting the ring in

2:06.9

the fire and seeing the writing on it, is how much this section of the book foreshadows other
