I have an admission I want to make that when I ask my dear wife Luella to marry me,

I didn't have a clue as to what made for a healthy, godly, loving relationship.

Poor Luella. I wish I had known those things. As I look back, we could avoid

much of the struggle of those early years. And I am deeply persuaded that there are

many Christian families who don't know that answer either. They don't actually know what makes

for a family that's unified and loving, where understanding can be found,

where problems can be solved, where a culture of grace and love lives.

And so I want to give you five words, five essential words, five words that God's grace makes possible for you,

five words that begin to move you toward the family that I think all of us want.

Surrender, purpose, discipline, patience, and mercy.

Let me start with surrender.

I think that if you want to have the family that God has planned for you,

if you want to know that love, if you want to know that love, if you want to know that unity,

if you want to know that joy, if you want to know that forgiveness, if you want to know
