Summary

Dr. Phil takes you through the best of the New Year. New Year's resolutions have their roots in ancient civilizations, starting around 4000 years ago with the Babylonians, who made promises to their gods in March to secure favor for the coming year. This tradition changed as Julius Caesar tinkered with the calendar shifting the New Year from March to January. Despite this long history, many people still struggle to keep their resolutions, with success rates varying significantly in different studies. Dr. Phil takes you through ways to improve the chances of fulfilling resolutions, living intentionally and purposefully, establishing healthy habits, and defining your own path without being solely reactive to the external world. Look, it's just another day, I get that.

0:02.2

There's 365 days in the year, and January 1st is just like any other day.

0:07.9

So why do we make resolutions on this day?

0:10.4

Well, I don't know.

0:11.4

It marks the beginning of a new year, so if you're going to take

0:14.2

stock, if you're going to decide to change something or some things, you know, why not do it at the

0:20.5

beginning of a calendar year? A lot of people do.

0:23.8

Marilyn Monroe back in the day resolved to go to acting class and never, ever miss.

0:31.8

John Mayer said his resolution was to be more thoughtful in

0:36.1

considering news. Rianis said stop shopping and

0:42.6

quit being late. Amy Schumer resolved to rally women to support each other.

0:46.6

Michelle Obama resolved to remember that it's okay to tell people know and

0:52.0

Bill Murray resolved to make more resolutions. I'm going to start out by talking about New Year's resolutions and I don't think they're all bad, by the way.

1:13.3

In fact, I was reading some research recently that said people who kind of have a goal

1:18.0

of something they want to do compared to those who actually make a commitment, make a resolution,

1:25.0

those that make the resolution are like 10 times more likely to achieve it

1:31.0

than those that just kind of have the goal in their head.

1:35.0

Now that doesn't mean resolutions are a great way to get things done,

1:41.0

but you're ten times more likely to do it if you at least make a resolution to do it

1:46.8

than just having it in your head. So resolutions, if they're done right, can be good as opposed to just having an awareness.

1:55.0

Awareness is like nothing. You don't get anything done.

1:59.0

I was really curious about where this whole idea of resolution started.
