Summary

In this 3-part series Natasha Helfer Parker, LCMFT (The Mormon Therapist and MormonMatters.org), interviews one of her earliest clients: a married, Mormon homosexual man, coming out to his wife. Names have been withheld to protect anonymity to the family. Note: The purpose of this interview is not to encourage people to stay or leave the church, to stay or leave a marriage, nor to participate or not participate in reparative therapy. These are all delicate personal decisions and different circumstances will necessitate different solutions. The purpose of this interview is to share a story. It is also meant to increase empathy and to reach out to those who may find themselves in similar situations.

So let's talk about this a little bit, not to interrupt the whole flow of the story, but this is something I think that a lot of people have the perception that the homosexual lifestyle is

0:29.0

different from the heterosexual lifestyle in the sense that there's much more promiscuity, that there's less

0:37.0

made commitment to long-term relationships, that even long-term relationships seem to be open sexually, or you know, these are a lot of the ideas or

0:48.0

myths or whatever you want to call them about the homosexual lifestyle.

0:53.0

So as you've kind of entered that lifestyle yourself, what do you have to say about that? What have you found to be?

1:03.0

I would say that there is everything. I would say that yes, in many ways, in the homosexual lifestyle, there is everything.

1:15.0

And I would say that there are gay couples that have what is called an open relationship.

1:29.0

Now my question is, how many straight couples are there that can honestly say that they have not been unfaithful to the spouse, and they can honestly say that?

1:52.0

And somewhere around 40%, I think.

1:57.0

Maybe 40%. Yes, let's say that. In the homosexual lifestyle, I think that it may be less than that, but there are, I have met couples that have been together for 20, 30 years, and they have committed to each other.

2:15.0

So it is, I think that it is what you want it to be. The same way that happens in the straight lifestyle.

2:28.0

There are the swingers, where there are clubs where you can exchange wives or spouses, and have sex that day with somebody else, and then go home and be with your spouse.

2:43.0

Right.

2:46.0

The percent, I agree, I think that there is a little bit more in the gay community, but that doesn't mean that there are not couples that are committed and faithful to each other, and love each other and respect each other, and like any other couples.

3:08.0

And want to make a life together.

3:10.0

I want to make a life together. Yes, absolutely. I want to have a committed relationship, of course.

3:20.0

So there is, I think there is everything, and I think that in many ways, when I also think that if they, the gay lifestyle was something that was more open and more accepted,

3:46.0

I think that it would not tend to be so hidden and so mysterious in many ways, because you don't want to be found.

4:02.0

So you tend to do things that sometimes are restrictive, because they are not acceptable.

4:10.0

Yeah, I think in the interview with Carolyn Pearson, John Dillon was asking her about this, and she said something to the expect of, you know, we expect people to go live in the gutter, but then not get dirty.
