You often hear about the gender pay gap, but what does that really mean?

There are different types of gender pay gaps.

The national gender pay gap, pay gaps within industries, and pay gaps within organizations.

The national gender pay gap is the percentage difference between women and men's

average weekly full-time equivalent earnings.

Over the last 20 years, the national gender pay gap has hovered between 15 and 18%.

This figure can be broken down into industry categories.

Every industry has a pay gap, favoring men, even female dominated industries.

This gap is much more than just numbers.

Behind the scenes, we find a web of interrelated work, family, and societal influences,

including gender stereotypes of the work women and men should do,

and the way that women and men should engage in the workforce.

Women and men work in different industries and different jobs, with female dominated industries

and jobs typically attracting lower wages than male dominated industries and jobs.

This is known as industrial and occupational segregation.

The lack of women in leadership also contributes to the gap, with men more likely to occupy the highest-paid jobs.
