At least 11 people have been killed after gunmen opened fire in the newsroom of French

Litteracle magazine Charlie Ebedo in Paris.

French President François O'Leont made the announcement from the scene, describing it

as a terror attack.

He said four more people were, quote, between life and death and said that police officers

were among the victims.

Police said that the gunmen opened fire inside the magazine's offices using automatic

AK-47 rifles before running away.

Charlie Ebedo gained notoriety in February 2006 when it reprinted cartoons of the Prophet

Muhammad, which originally appeared in the Danish Daily Ulan's Pusan, causing controversy

across the Muslim world.

Then, in November 2011, its offices were firebombed when the satirical magazine published

a cartoon of Muhammad under the title, Sharia Ebedo.

Speaking in January 2013, publisher Stefan Shabonnier, known as Shab, said that when they

use images of the Prophet, it's not to ridicule him, but to ridicule those who use his image

in a negative way.
