work in a long battle over declassification, the Senate Select Committee on

Intelligence today finally released its extensive report on the CAA's

detention and interrogation program in the early 2000s and it is damning indeed.

The heavily redacted 500-place page executive summary of the committee's

findings represents this country's first official reckoning with the torture

regime operated by the US from 2001 to 2009 and it shows that torture carried

out by the CAA was far more brutal, far more widespread, and on far shakier legal

ground than the agency had previously represented. That the torture program was

ineffective, destroying the single key rationale for implementing it in the

first place, and that the CAA will fully misled media outlets, lawmakers,

national security officials, and the White House about both the extent of the

program and its effectiveness. The Senate report is rife with chilling details

about how the CAA treated the 119 known detainees who passed through its
