John McCain has gone from being a maverick to Leicester Maddox.

McCain's adamant opposition to lifting Don't Ask Don't Tell has dashed any congressional

hopes for ending this blatant discrimination.

This week, the Senate fell just three vote short of doing away with Don't Ask Don't Tell,

and McCain's opposition was key.

Over the years, he shifted his rationals on this issue, but his homophobic attitude

sure hasn't changed a bit.

So now, in his fading years, he's chosen to go down like Maddox, or Georgia Wallace,

or Oral Fobbus, or Strom Thurmond.

That's his choice, I suppose, to muck up his reputation even further, a reputation that

at one time had him standing up to the crazies and his party, but now he's just another

crazy.

Fortunately, this doesn't mean the end to the campaign to get rid of Don't Ask Don't Tell.

That campaign will ultimately be successful as the courts, perhaps even our current conservative

Supreme Court, will recognize this blatant discrimination for what it is.

On that day, all the courageous activists can rejoice, and John McCain will be left to

stay still in his own rancid juices.
