In a move intended to upend the Apple Market, Washington State

University has invented a new version of the crunchy red fruit. Their ambitions for the new

breed are obvious in the name they gave it, the Cosmic Crisp. Wow, the Cosmic Crisp. It's

either the world's best Apple or a brilliant marketing move on the part of Washington State.

In any case, the Cosmic Crisp has been in development for, get this, 20 years, and it will finally make it to the market December 1st, following a campaign that's built a whole lot of desire for this new breed.

The University holds the patent on the crisp juicy apple, a hybrid cross between the

popular honey crisp and a lesser-known apple called the Enterprise. The Cosmic Crisp gets its

satisfying, crunchy sweetness from the Honey Crisp and hardness from the Enterprise. But it's named

after its appearance and deep red flocked with a sea of tiny white dots.
