Hi this is Dave and this is John and welcome to episode 20 of Geek's Guide to the Galaxy.

Today we'll be interviewing Eli Kintish.

He's a reporter for Science magazine

and has also written for Slate, Discover, and The New Republic

and his new book is called Hack the Planet, Science's Best Hope or Worst Nightmare for

averting Climate Catastrophe, sort of about the extremely ambitious, extremely

risky geoengineering schemes that are being proposed to address climate change.

And there's a back cover blurb that says hack the planet reads like a sci-fi novel but it's all the

scarier because it's true.

So geoengineering for those of you who may not be familiar with the term, you know, you're probably familiar with

Terraforming, which is a sort of common trope in science fiction, and so Geoengineering is kind of

low scale Terraforming here on Earth, whereas terraforming would typically be extra

terrestrial planets like we we've often seen terraforming done on Mars and and other

planets on our solar system and also in on exosolar planets but geoengineering is strictly trying to save the earth from the

damage we've done to it here and seems like a great topic for us.

So I'm really looking forward to talking to Eli Kentish and then stick around after the interview when

John and I will be talking about climate change in fiction and terraforming.
