This is John Batchel. Speaking with colleague Gordon Chang, Guadoghag province, the scene of the

Chinese miracle in the 20th century into the 21st, manufacturers of all cheap goods, low-end stuff that

flooded the U.S. and was greeted with lots of cash. Great success in the 20th century.

In the 21st, it's turned to another story, a story of loss, of despair, of people without

opportunities to move, and the factory is closing. Guangdong province, the original miracle,

now turned to, if not a nightmare, certainly grief.

You read that correctly, John.

Now, Guangdong was the first boom spot in China after Deng Xiaoping took over and started to allow the loosening of rules that the Chinese people demanded. And so Guangdong prospered. It was the engine of Chinese growth. What's happened since then is that Chinese leaders have wanted to diversify

manufacturing because they did not want to be dependent on Guangdong. So we've seen high-tech

manufacturing prosper elsewhere. Gwondong still has some high-tech manufacturing, but nonetheless,

most of it is what you describe, low-end stuff. And so the low-end

manufacturers in Guangdong are suffering terribly right now because they're not only dealing

with the tariffs, they're dealing with competition from places like Vietnam and Bangladesh and

places all over the world where labor is cheaper.

And so these low-end manufacturers are having a difficult time of making do,

and many of them have gone out of business.
