In 2016, a fresh appeal was launched for new information about the disappearance of a little boy in the North Ayrshire region of Scotland.

40 years earlier, 3-year-old Sandy Davidson disappeared from his grandparents' garden in St.

Kilda Street in Irvine on April 23rd, 1976. It's believed he went to look of the family dog, which had escaped through an open gate.

Sandy had been playing in the garden with his younger sister Donna when he went to look for the dog.

Police were called immediately after he was discovered missing, but despite an extensive

search by police and members of the public, alongside a media campaign, no trace of Sandy was found.

Detective Superintendent David Halliday, in charge of the cold case, told BBC Scotland,

Friday, April 23rd, 1976 was a relatively warm day as Sandy played outside with his sister. The community was tight-knit,

and everyone knew their neighbour. He was quite a distinctive-looking child, with light blonde hair and

blue eyes. He'd been playing in the garden, in the back. The children were being looked after by the

grandparents who'd gone inside at the time.

The gate had sprung open by itself, and their dog had run out.

Sandy ran straight after the dog.

His sister Donna said she remembered Sandy gesturing to her to go with him, but she ran indoors instead and told her grandparents.

One theory developed at the time was that a man seen delivering leaflets in the area had opened to the gate and snatched Sandy when he ran out of it.

There's also a river about five miles from the house, and another theory was that Sandy had entered the river following the dog and drowned,

although why he would have gone five miles,

and why the dog would have gone five miles to the river,

doesn't really make sense.

Sandy was never found.
