I'm John Batch with Professor Evan Ellis of the U.S. Army War College.

Responding to ideas and Reuters this morning, following the executive orders and the remarks of the new president of the United States,

about Mexico and China, Mexico, and

fentanyl, Mexico, and trade, Mexico, and the migrant flow, and also what is to be done.

In the late winter, early spring of 1916, a man by the name of Pancho Villa, a bandit rode out of Mexico and raided a town in New

Mexico, Columbus. That triggered what became the expeditionary force that rode into Mexico

in pursuit of Montchonchovia that year, led by a man who would become famous in Europe in the

First War, Pershing. However, the precedent here is important. Caranza was then the president of

Mexico. He may or may not have given permission for Pershing and a military force, large cavalry

mounted with automobiles and trucks bringing along supplies to ride into Mexico in several

directions in the mountains of the north. Chihuahua State is my memory. In any event, it didn't capture Pancho Villa, who went on

to become a Hollywood celebrity by making movies of himself. These were odd days. But in any event,

is it a precedent? So I turned to the professor. We've discussed this. Are we going to hear about

Pancho Villa when the U.S. says we will consider dispatching

U.S. military personnel into your territory to pursue the cartels?

I'm getting ahead of the news, but the romance of it is too tempting, professor.

That's a good question and one that I'm sure is getting a lot of attention in Mexico and in other parts of the world.

It was interesting that on the one hand, of course, President Trump on his inauguration day said that

stranger things would happen, in other words, not ruling it out, although the

allusion to possible action is something that has been a long time of modus operandi

of President Trump as he negotiates different things.
